Who is ACC CORP., INC.

ACC Corp., Inc. is one of the leading Linux OS, tools, and applications vendors, on and off the Internet. We publish a catalog of Linux tools and applications, which is available as a four colour paper catalog, an ascii file available by ftp and email, and the web.

ACC was founded in 1993, by Robert Young -a former computer finance executive. For the first year it was a small publisher of Unix magazines, having published a magazine called New York UNIX, and co-founded the Linux Journal in partnership with SSC of Seattle.

In the April 1994 issue of New York UNIX ACC ran a mail-order ad for the Linux OS from various suppliers, and to make a long story short, within 90 days we had evolved from being a small publishing company with a mail order activity, to being a mail-order business with a small publishing side-line.

By September 94, ACC was no longer in the publishing business, and was looking for new and interesting Linux products to add to its growing catalog. Several customers recommended the new Red Hat Linux distribution which at that time was shipping as a beta CD.

RED HAT SOFTWARE

In 1993, Marc Ewing, a graduate of Carnegie Mellon's School of Computer Science, was bent on developing a commercial programming tool of his own design. It was while researching the available platforms on which to do the development that he came across Linux.

Having selected Linux as his development platform of choice he then suffered the frequent complaint of many developers who had tried using Linux as a development platform, namely that he spent too much of his time administering the OS. This led him to the conclusion that what the world needed was not another development tool, but a Linux distribution that was simply easier to install and maintain, followed Unix industry standards and methods, and was easier to upgrade as new features and utilities became available.

RED HAT LINUX DISTRIBUTION

Linux, like UNIX, is a very modular operating system, which offers terrific technical advantages, but can make Linux difficult for new users. "Distributions" make Linux useful for computer users who did not have advanced operating system skills. A good Linux distribution eliminates most of the effort of selecting, compiling, and installing the required Linux OS modules onto a computer.

The Red Hat Linux distribution was launched to very positive reviews, but by late 1994 Red Hat was suffering from a lack of recognition compared to the more visible and popular Linux distributions available over the Internet.

RED HAT COMMERCIAL LINUX

In January of 95 Young and Ewing agreed to reposition the Red Hat Linux Distribution to address the growing numbers of corporate customers who were using Linux for serious commercial endeavors and who needed a Linux supplier who understood sound commercial support and development priorities.

The first of these products: Red Hat Commercial Linux, and the Red Hat Linux Developers Program are now available and can be purchased through ACC.
